The Bajío and sovereignty: where the value stays

Guanajuato leads Mexico's electric vehicle supply base. In electromobility, sovereignty is measured by how much of the vehicle's value, know-how and data stays in the country.

The installed base

Guanajuato’s automotive industry rests on four light-vehicle assembly plants (General Motors, Honda, Mazda and Toyota) and an auto-parts chain that totaled USD 5,692 million in the first four months of 2026, 13.6% of the national total. The ecosystem brings together more than 2,500 companies.

The electric supply base already exists

The 2026 Electromobility Mapping in Mexico records 495 companies linked to electric vehicles; Guanajuato leads with 138, 27.9% of the total. By category, the state has 26 suppliers of batteries and capacitors, 18 of electric drivetrain, 7 of power control units and 13 of thermal management. In the first half of 2026 it attracted USD 135.5 million in 15 automotive projects, four of them tied to electromobility. Two hundred kilometers away, San Luis Potosí will assemble high-voltage batteries from 2027.

Local demand is growing too

Guanajuato sold 6,101 electrified vehicles in 2025, and 6,925 are projected for 2026.

What sovereignty means

In electromobility, sovereignty is not a national logo. It is how much of the vehicle’s value, know-how and data stays in the country. It can be measured in layers:

  • Design and engineering. Mexico already has it: Olinia was designed with public institutions.
  • Integration and assembly. Already present in automakers and Tier 1 suppliers.
  • Power and control electronics. Partly present, with suppliers mapped in the Bajío.
  • Battery management (BMS) and usage data. Decides who knows the battery’s state of health and who captures its second life.
  • Battery pack assembly. Starts in 2027 with global automakers.
  • Cells and minerals. Today fully dependent on imports.

Bajío Ventures’ position

A vehicle with 70% domestic components and an imported cell is real industrial progress. Sovereignty is decided in the layers where the value is: the battery, its management and its data. Also in the energy that powers the plants and the depots where those vehicles charge. The Bajío has the supplier base. The missing stretch is energy and battery.

Bajío Ventures is a Mexican energy infrastructure investment group based in Guanajuato. It works on three fronts: capital, a data platform on the regional industrial base, and a German industrial channel. It has its own advisory presence in Berlin.
